I’m kind of on a dessert kick lately, and this week I found something that my allergy-prone readers can enjoy as well: Wink Frozen Desserts. This just popped up in my local Whole Foods (they’re a little slow to get products up here in New England).

So, when I saw Wink on the shelves of the freezer section, I got pretty excited. The packaging and name are both adorable (my #1 & #2 qualifications for finding a product I love), so I had high hopes. What excited me a bit more, though, is that Wink actually doesn’t contain any of the top 8 allergens. For those of you unfamiliar, that’s wheat, fish, dairy, soy, tree nuts, eggs, peanuts and shellfish. For a dairy free ice cream to also be free of soy, peanuts or tree nuts is pretty impressive! This also opens a lot of doors for kids (or grown up kids) with allergies who want to have some frozen treats every once in a while. Pretty exciting stuff!

Available Flavors

Wink actually has a pretty wide variety of flavors, with something that everyone is bound to enjoy. The flavors are also not too common in terms of ice cream, which makes them all the more interesting.

Flavors include:

  • Cake Batter
  • Choco-Mint
  • Cinnamon Bun
  • Cocoa-dough
  • Iced Latte
  • Vanilla Bean
  • Peanut Butter & Jelly
  • Black Cherry Cacao Nib
  • Strawberry Cheesecake
  • Caramel Candy Apple – I couldn’t find this flavor, but will pay you in Simoleons, WoW gold or Reddit karma if you can track some down… :p

I liked the flavor of the wink – it was a little bit weak, but overall, good. It’s kind of watered-down, but when you think about it, that’s literally what you’re consuming, so it makes sense. It was also nice to pair with some flavorful toppings.

I’ll be honest – the texture here is not like ice cream. I mean, for 25 calories per half cup serving of a dairy free treat, I really didn’t expect it to be that similar. It’s  a little icy and gritty, but still smooth enough to enjoy. If you can consume dairy, I’d probably recommend another brand (unless you really want some of their unique flavors!), but otherwise – this is solid.

Wink Frozen Desserts are sweetened with stevia extract and monk fruit extract. They pride themselves on sourcing organic ingredients, and are actually non-GMO Project certified. If this isn’t important to you, then you can ignore that part, but the company is committed to providing a healthy and safe alternative to ice cream.

Per half cup serving, the macros are as follows:

  • calories: 25
  • carbs: 3g net
  • fiber: 1g
  • fat: 0g
  • protein: 2g

So, super low in fat, and also pretty low in everything else.

The price on their website is listed as $8, but I found this at Whole Foods for $4.99, so there seems to be a range.

Other Notes:

There are a lot of gums in this, and some sugar alcohols, which may upset your stomach a bit. I kind of always take that as the price of consuming keto ice cream. It’s just something to keep in mind if you’re going to be in an enclosed space for the next 12-18 hours (typical digestion time!). :p

This vegan keto ice cream substitute also has a bit of a benefit, in that it doesn’t have that addictive quality. I was totally satisfied with a half cup serving, and didn’t feel the need to inhale the whole pint.

Wink Vegan Keto Ice Cream Review Summary:

Definitely worth checking out if you have a lot of food allergies, or if you’re looking for a vegan keto ice cream. This will certainly help in both arenas, especially if you use the ice cream as a carrier for toppings. All the toppings.
